BELUR, KARNATAKA


Belur is one of the historical places in Karnataka which welcomes thousands of visitors every day. It was the capital of the Hoysala empire in the 11th Century and It is famous for its beautiful architecture. 1. CHENNA KESAVA TEMPLE





King Vishnuvardhana built this temple which is dedicated to Lord Vijayanarayana. The sculpture of Darpana Sundari (lady with a mirror) is noteworthy for its flawless craftsmanship.





2. HALEBIDU





Halebidu was the capital of the Hoysala dynasty and it was formerly called Dwarasamudra. It has another famed collection of Hindu and Jain temples showing 12th century Hoysala architecture and artwork. It is located at a distance of 16km from Belur and you get a lot of local transport to reach Halebidu.





3. THE GRAVITY PILLAR





This is the unique 42 ft tall lamp post/pillar. It appears to be standing on its own dead weight and has astounded visitors for ages.





4. SHRAVANABELAGOLA





Sharavanabelagola is about 75 km from Belur on National Highway 75 and is one of the most important Jainism pilgrimage sites in South India. The word Shravanabelagola literally means ‘the white pond of Sravana’ as ‘bel’ means white and ‘kola’ means pond in Kannada. The statue of Lord Gomatheeswara is 57 ft tall and it is the largest monolithic idol in the world.
